Cork’s new sparkling tradition is finally here. Mia Gold’s Drag School waiting list is finally out for those interested in receiving updates and applying to the school.
It’s a 10 week course teaching all the essentials: history, improv, make-up and so much more to be the next Glamazons, ready to entertain and perform.
It’s essential to master all the tips and tricks of the gender-bending artform, as we’ve seen in shows such as Rupaul’s Drag Race and Drag Me to Dinner, it’s about Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent. And while, basic skills are the foundation, performers and established drag personalities can bring a different perspective and actual tips of what the art is all about, things that audiences wouldn’t even think of.
Mia Gold is teaming up with Gay Project Ireland for its third year in a row: offering training for people who want to get into drag, in those areas that are essential (but also might be challenging) when starting out and on a mission to empower new artists.
While applications have not opened just yet, the anticipation is high: Mia Gold shared on her social media platforms that you can join the wait list by emailing Gay Project Ireland or complete a form linked on her instagram bio in order to help the organisers know how many people are interested and to receive further information. This year the school might go back to its origins, potentially starting the course in May and ending in July. Every year the course ends with a Draguation, last year held at The Pavillion, Cork. In this grand final show queens get to display all their extravaganza, everything that they’ve learned, debuting in a supportive space, launching their careers.
Graduates from the previous years have since continued to perform and craft their own path, an example are last year graduates Karma, MissSelene and Tadhgliatelly partnered with The Wickham, Limerick and local queen Lucy Fur to perform their own shows and share the passion and art of drag.
An advice that Miss Gold would give to all aspiring “drag queens, kings and freaks” is to: “Just have fun with it. If you don’t enjoy it, it’s just nuts, not fun for anybody, not for yourself, not for you.”
Mia Gold, from Portugal, started doing drag in 2013 and brought to Cork a lot of hope for newer queens or wannabe queens to learn from seasoned performers and professionals. You may have seen her performing at Cork Pride, and with the haus of Mockie Ah. You can check her social media to see for yourself what she’s all about.
